What is the best way to take notes?

27 Nov

While watching the movie “The 11th hour” we tried different methods on taking notes.

The first one was to share a Google document online and share the notes with each other. We did not think this was a great idea because some people start to write irrelevant notes and its not the best to have 10 people working on the same document at the same time. The second method we tried out was to take notes on your own. We did this on our own computer in a program called One Note. The last thing we did was to try the old fashion way with pen and paper. Because almost all the writing we do at our school is on the computer was it a bit strange to write by using pen and paper again. You could also tell that we now write a lot faster on our computers than we do by hand.

Our conclusion was that the best way for us to take notes by ourselves on our own computer. If you use this method you have your notes at all times saved on your computer and not on a paper that can be easy to loose. You can also concentrate on what you are writing and not anyone else.

The 11th hour

27 Nov

Today we have seen the movie “The 11th hour”.

It’s a movie about global warming and the damage the humans are making to the earth and the environment. We also got to see a lot of devastating pictures of storms, floods and hurricanes.  The point is to make everyone who watches it more aware of what we are doing to the world we are living in. One quote from the movie I really liked was “It’s not about saving the planet, it’s about saving the environment humans can live in”. I think this is really true because the earth will survive no matter what we do to it and new species will develop. But the human race needs some essential basic things, like the temperature needs to be like it is now.

This movie really teaches you a lot about how the global warming affects us and the planet. It’s a real eye opener and makes you think about how the earth will look in hundred years from now. Especially when it comes to the nature and the Arctic. The ice is melting really fast so the scientist believe that the sea level is going to rise with about 10 meters. If this happens without us taking any precautions a lot of land is going to be under water.

You should really watch this movie if you care about the environment and want to learn more about global warming.

The Edublog Awards!

20 Nov

This year I would like to nominate two blogs for the Edublog Award. In the categorys “best student blog”and “best teacher blog”

In the category “best student blog” I would like to nominate the following blog                               ” http://englishkaroline.blogspot.no/ “. This blog is written by a 16 year old girl called Karoline.

I would also like to nominate a blog in the category “best teacher blog”. http://annmic.wordpress.com/

Why blog?

13 Nov

Our teacher gave us these questions about the blog:

Do you think there is more pressure on how you perform/write when you use blogs instead of writing a paper for the teacher only?

I think that the pressure gets higher when you write on your blog. The fact that you know that strangers can read your posts and not just your teacher makes the strive for perfection even higher. It’s kind of embarrassing if you write something wrong on your blog because you know that many people are going to read it. It also gives you a lot of motivation when you see that you get a lot of hits on your blog.

Do you think the use of blogs reduces the difference between your work at school and your everyday life?

I think the use of blog reduces the difference between school and work. The fact that you have to write something that everyone can see is more like a work situation. This will of course be different from person to person and the effort you choose to put into your blog. I think that we are learning a lot by writing our blogs and I think that we are learning a lot without even knowing it. Maybe one day in a few years the reason behind these blogs will hit us and it will be a bit clearer why we write them. I also thinks that it has an effect on our everyday life because we can write about it. When we get the chance we can also write about things that interests us.

The US Election

6 Nov

Today is the president election day in the USA. This is an important day, not only in The US but also for the rest of the world. Because America is such a big and important country with a lot of power will the result influence all of us. Today the republican Mitt Romney and democrat Barrack Obama are fighting for the throne. Many people are sure that Barrack Obama is the one who will win the election this year too, as he did in 2008. Even though Mitt Romney is getting more and more votes.

According to Voting and Registration Data – US Census 2008, the United States of America voter turnout was 58%. To compare with other countries, in Norway 76% of the people voted.  The best thing would be if 100% voted and used their right to vote. The politicians also use a lot of money during their campaign. Obama spent 852.9 m $ and Romney spent 752.3 m $ on the election this year to get peoples votes.

Obama and Romney have quite different opinions. Obama wants girls to have abortion rights, he thinks it should be allowed to abort and girls should get the morning after pill on prescription if they want to. Romney used to support abortion, but is now against them. Furthermore Obama also supports gay marriage. In USA today gay marriage is only legal in some states, if Obama wins he will make a difference so that gay marriage is allowed all over the country. Romney is against gay marriage, as a Mormon he don’t think it’s right to let people of the same sex get married.

When it comes to taxes Obama wants everyone who can afford it and earns a lot of money to pay more tax so that the ones who are struggling can pay less. Obama wants wealthy people to pay at least 30% of their income while Romney wants to drop all the tax rates. He wants to lower the taxes.

They both want to improve the education system in America and Obama says that he wants the American schools to be the best. They also agree to a lot of things when it comes to decisions about war, the military and they both want to get more people jobs. Romney says that if he gets elected as president he will get 12million new jobs out on the marked.

Barrack Obama’s plans:

If Barrack Obama gets elected for president, his first plan is to help people who were hit by the storm Sandy to recover form it economically. This wouldn’t be a big problem, he says, because USA is a county that gets back on its feet very quickly after a natural disaster.

Obama has a long- term economic plan that involves investment in education, small businesses, clean energy and lower taxes especially for companies that brings jobs back to United States of America.

He wants to cut taxes by 3 600 USD for the typical American middle class family, allowing them to get a paying of 50 00 USD per year. Obama’s long- term economic plan also involves that USA has to use more of its own energy sources rather than buying energy from other countries. This means utilizing the American made energy to its maximum while the climate doesn’t get affected at the same time.

When President Obama was in charge, America has experienced 32 straight months of job growth, 5.4 million more private sector jobs, and nearly 479 000 manufacturing jobs since the year 2010. This is a clear sign that Barrack Obama will make a good US President.

President Obama was the one who ended the war in Iraq and returned US troops home from Afghanistan. Now his plan is to use half the savings from the war to pay back some of the debt and to invest in new building projects in the US.Another plan is to help young and hardworking immigrants who were brought here as children to get better health less hard work.

Mitt Romney’s plans:

Mitt Romney’s plans are quite similar to Obama’s plans because Mitt Romney also wants to lower the taxes, for instance. He wants to make a smaller, a simpler and a smarter government by cutting the taxes for the typical middle class families in USA and increasing the taxes for the rich people in the country.

However, Mitt Romney’s plans don’t involve withdrawal of American troops in Afghanistan. His further plans are unknown.

Another negative thing about Romney as US president is that he refused to help immigrants who came to USA as children.

Well, I don’t think I have to say more about Romney’s plans because I’m 100% democrat. I really hope that Obama wins the election even though I don’t live in the USA. I think he made a very good progress the last four years and that he would make a great American President.

We think everyone is entitled of their own opinion and who they support when it comes to the election. Obama is our favorite candidate and we hope to see him win and become the president of The United States once again.

Big miracle and Alaska natives

5 Nov

A few days ago I watched the movie Big miracle at school. The story is about three whales who gets trapped in the ice north in Alaska. A local news reporter trips over the case and it all develops into a big story all over the US. News reporters from all over the country travels to Alaska to follow the case. Greenpeace also gets involved as they wants to save the whales and stop the Inuits from killing them. After a lot of back and forth everyone decides to work together to try and save the whales.

I enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to others.

Inuit are a group of indigenous people who live in Alaska, Greenland and Canada.  Alaska is the home to at least twenty indigenous Alaskan Native languages. The natives hunt sea animals and has their own little community. They don’t have the best living conditions but they want to hold on to their traditions and they don’t want to depend on modern society. Furthermore they used to make a lot of their own clothes and survives by using the resources they find in the nature, but they buy normal clothes and buys food at the store . As with most diverse native cultures, traditions and language have faded in the new world. The Alaska Native language center was established by state legislation in 1972 as a center for research and documentation of twenty native languages of Alaska. The center publishes their research in story collections, dictionaries, grammars, and research papers, as well as storing more than 10,000 artifacts written in or about Alaska Native languages.  In addition to the center, in April 2012, the Alaska Legislature passed Senate Bill 130, authorizing the formation of the Alaska Native Language Preservation and Advisory Council. In May, Governor Sean Parnell signed the bill into law. The council of five language experts and two rural legislators, will advise the governor and legislature on projects and policy for language preservation and revitalization. The movie gives a quite good description on how the Inuit lives. I don’t think the reality is very different from what we see in the movie.

Please comment if you know some interesting facts about the Inuit.

Greenpeace

3 Nov

Greenpeace is a worldwide organization who wants to be the earths voice. They want to save the environment and help animals in danger. it all started in 1971 when a small team of activists who all believed that every individual can make a difference sat sail from Vancouver, Canada. Their mission was to “bear witness” in the US about underground nuclear testing on a small island in Alaska. Greenpeace is now represented in 40 countries across the world. As they want to stay independent they don’t accept donations from the government.

Greenpeace has six focal points:

Greenpeace has now existed for about 40 years and have achieved a lot. As they say it’s 40 years of inspiring action.
